Admittedly, the only reason I took the budget route with this trip is purely because I wanted to make sure that I enjoy bikepacking before going all out on gear. Typically, I take the complete opposite approach and drop a bunch of money on gear and then determine if I like it or not. I like to look at it as “paying it forward” to the next guy, to make me feel better about the expenditures.
My first order of business was determining the destination. I decided to ride from my house in Fairport, NY and take the Erie Canal Trail to Syracuse, NY and camp out, then ride back the following day. Nothing too crazy, but 180 miles round trip isn’t too shabby. After determining the destination, I scoured YouTube and various forums to determine what gear I needed and what gear could be used that I already had. Below is the list of gear that I needed (prices may vary, these are just roughly what I paid):
- Tent: Kelty Salida 2 - $80
- REI 15L Compression Sack for Tent: $20
- Klymit Static Sleeping Pad: $40
- Marmot Nanowave 45 Sleeping Bag: $80
- Evo Top Tube Bag: $10
- Rockbros Handlebar Bag (ebay special): $30
- Rockbros Large Frame Bag (ebay special) $20
- B-Soul Saddle Bag (ebay special - do not recommend): $20
TOTAL SPEND: $300
As I’m sure all of you can relate, I have acquired a pretty extensive array of gear since falling in love with cycling. Below is the packing list that I put together for this trip in case you are curious. Full disclosure, I am a complete bikepacking rookie and would love some pointers from any of you veterans. Feel free to leave them in the comments below.
